JD DeHart- Three Poems

Copper Serpents

they writhe
and interwine
rising up the spine
overlooking the ancient
scene with pale
eyes and flicking
tongues, two figures
of fear, encased.

Awl

he leaned
in the doorpost,
offering his ear
and receiving
a splash of blood,
now bound to
the household,
his own crying
echoing in the yard.

Contraption

everyone saw the inventor
putting the contraption
together, but few thought
much of it

until they saw a dark shape
cross the sun
and went looking for him.
